What is a “Boutique” Bass Guitar ?

I’ve often heard the word boutique in reference to a bass or guitar.  I was never all that clear on the definition so I started a thread on TalkBass to get opinion of the masses of bassist.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines a boutique as…

bou·tique (b›-t¶k“) n. 1.a. A small retail shop that specializes in gifts, fashionable clothes, accessories, or food, for example. b. A small shop located within a large department store or supermarket. 2. An investment boutique. –attributive. Often used to modify another noun.

After reviewing the TB thread I’ve come up with the following definition…

Boutique Bass: “A high end, hand crafted bass made by a low production luthier that has been tailored for a specific bassists’ needs and requirements.”

All of this is to allow for categorization of the over 900 bass brands in Terri’s Bass-Aholic.  The website now allows for searching of bass brands that are considered “boutique”.

Please note that only a few basses are set as being boutique basses.  That’s not say that’s all there is.  It’s just a work in progress and the list will grow over time.  If your faves are missing, please contact me.
